The Grande Prairie Airport was developed in the 1930’s at the present site. In 1941 in support of the war effort, the facility was expanded from a grass strip for utilization by the Royal Canadian and US Air Force. In 1950 the airport came under the authority of the Federal Government until February 1, 1997 at which time it was transferred to the City of Grande Prairie.
